A vine like guard rail to prevent people from falling over into the sunken dining room of a residence in Pittsboro NC.
A pedestrian gate in an interpretation of traditional New Mexico coyote fencing done in steel pipe and steel darkening patina.
Door handles were traced from a company logo in Adobe illustrator. Proportions were altered and drawing was scaled to the size of large door handles. The image file was water jet cut from 1/2” mild steel and then parts were bent in a hydraulic press to a realistic fork side profile.

A traditional European Tapestry loom made of modern materials. Loom base folds smaller for storage and on casters to easily move around. Made of Aluminum plastic and a few steel parts.
Galvanized Steel Hatch for access to a garden cistern. Hatch is made flush with ground as to not be a tripping hazard. Cistern hatch is now covered with mulch hidden from sight but convenient to use if access is needed. Previous solution was a heavily rusted steel plate with a handle that was a constant tripping hazard.
Garden Gate is made of all solid steel and powder coated. Latch system is stainless steel and entirely custom made
A climate controlled steel and glass octagonal wine tasting room in a wine cave in Napa CA. I project managed the metal framework and display cabinets. Fabrication was performed by myself and my crew while I worked at Ferrous Studios in 2016.

This is a multi tank sea water system designed to house multiple seawater aquariums on a single salt water system. Manifolds provide saltwater flow to individual tanks which can overflow into a catch basin where water is then filtered and run back through the system.
Trays can be set to exact distances away from a cesium source.
This is a rework of the UNC Miller Lab Flume. I removed the leaky plywood and acrylic flume and rebuilt it out entirely of acrylic. Existing wood frame and PVC were reused. System sealed up with no leaks.

This is an ongoing project for the UNC Miller Lab. It is a massive flow tank with a 14.5 ft long 2ft by 2ft acrylic working section. The Acrylic working section I built was originally made of marine plywood which had rotted away. I had to splice fiberglass pipe sections which had been cut so the flow tank could be transported. The Acrylic working section still has the masking film on it, thus why it looks like card board in the image.
An upside down acrylic pyramidal hopper used for mixing saltwater. Salt collects on the filter screen at the point on the pyramid where the pump input is plumbed. Water from the tank then cascades through channels near the opening of the pyramid base mixing and dissolving the salt on the screen. This system allows for students to just toss in salt as needed without manual mixing.

An all acrylic flow tank for fluid dynamics experimentation
Custom made hand held electronic device for stimulating hagfish slime glands. A microcontroller sends an 18v electronic pulse to stimulate a hagfish to release slime exudate.
This flow tank uses corn syrup for low Reynolds number fluid experimentation. A progressive cavity pump is used for it’s ability to pump highly viscous fluid with little pulsation. A georotor or even peristaltic pumps would not provide an as steady flow.
This laser cut and solvent glued acrylic tray holder is designed to hold plastic lab sample dishes upside down in a saltwater tank. the lab dishes are meant to house juvenile marine tunicates (sea squirts) so they can grow to full sized adults.
This is a custom made wind tunnel for the Miller Lab at University of Arizona. It uses 16 BLDC motors in a 4 by 4 grid to control airflow through the wind tunnel. The motors are individually throttleable in forward and reverse. The fwd and rev motor control is meant to create sheer currents in experiments in insect flight.

The Any Element survival pack is a winter survival pack meant for back country skiing or snow boarding it has an integrated fold out sleeping pad and a space blanket sleeping bag to keep warm in case one gets lost or stranded in bad weather.

The wooden pulse jet is a Lockwood style pulse jet made from wood. Lockwood pulse jets are typically made from stainless steel sheet metal. I used planks of wood that have holes drilled in such a way that when the assembly is stacked and bolted together the internal cavity forms the shape of the Lockwood pulse jet design. Propane is plumbed into the combustion chamber to fuel the jet. A shopvac was used to blow air into the wood pulse jet to sustain its operation. Eventually the pulse jet consumes itself from the inside out and flames can be seen jetting out the sides of the assembly.

A 7.5 ft diameter 4V geodesic sphere with expanded metal mesh. It is essentially a human sized hamster ball.
Fish bug was a fire art installation for Burning Man in 2009. The project designers Jessica Hobbs and Rebecca Anders had trouble sourcing balanced propane manifolds that would serve their needs. Specifically they needed 16 outputs per manifold. I designed, custom fabricated and machined two of these manifolds for the Fish Bug project, they worked beautifully and kept a seal well above operating pressure.
